ARCHITECT’S MONUMENT -
As per the brief given, we have to design a sculpture that acts as a symbolic representation of the chosen architect’s work, which reflects on his style and philosophy. Tadao Ando is self taught Japanese architect. as the recipient of the 1995 Pritzker prize, he is highly regarded for his unparalleled work with concrete, sensitive treatment of natural light, and strong engagement with nature.
Enso is a sacred symbol in zen Buddhism meaning ‘circle’. it is one of the most common subjects of Japanese calligraphy even though it is a symbol and not a character. the Enso symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, mu (the void), minimalism, emptiness, infinity and timelessness. its interpretation depends upon every indivisual’s perception.
the basic shape of the sculpture is derived from Enso. if you give people nothingness, they can ponder what can be achieved from that nothingness. the structure is surrounded by lotus petals which is another sacred symbol from Buddhism which represents purity, spiritual awakning, rebirth, beauty, prosperity and eternity which complements sculpture.
